Houry Cup (Saturday 20/6/09)
This Saturday, 20th June, yachts will compete for the Houry Cup. Originally set for a race "outside the Harbour", this year's course will be from DYC, around Bongoyo and Pangavini Islands and back. Sign on at 13:00 and race start at 14:00 sharp. Come back next week for an account of the race.
Kuru Cup (Saturday 13/6/09)
The first trophy event of the new yachting season, this cup was conceived for a "series race in front of the Governor's Offices". Four boats showed up for an earlier-than-usual start in strong (20kt) southerly winds. Three races were sailed on a windward-leeward course from Kawe to Msasani.
Kusi, sailed by her new owner George & Jane Calder took part in the first two races, before retiring for other commitments. Baby Blue (Mark Hart) managed the strong conditions in spite of sailing only two-up, and succeeded at nipping Kusi's heels around the course. Saggitarius and Smack Water Jack contested for the front of the fleet, enjoying some tactical covering moves on the upwind leg until Saggy "parked" temporarily on a coral head near the south end of the bay. In the second and third races, Saggy succeeded in holding SWJ at bay to take line honours by about a minute. SWJ, flying her smaller spinnaker achieved a top (flat water) speed of 11.4kts on the leeward leg - and struggled to gybe the kite in brisk conditions. Well done SWJ who took first place overall on handicap.
